This city, which rises from the crater of a great meteoroid crash, can only be reached through the sea or from the sky.
Wallace's home and location of his gym would be Sootopolis City in the Hoenn Region. Sootopolis City is only accessible by Diving (through Route 126), Flying, or Soaring in the games, and can only be accessed after receiving the previous seven Gym badges. Sootopolis City is located in the eastern part of the region. The city is said to have been built inside of an old volcanic crater that eventually was filled with rainwater. The lore behind the creation of the crater actually varies from game to game. In the original Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, it was said to have been created by an eruption of an underwater volcano. In Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, this lore changes. It is said that the crater formed was the result of a meteorite that struck the region thousands of years ago.
The layout of Sootopolis is circular due to its nature as a crater, with much of the town being centered around the Gym. Because the city is built inside a crater, the layout of the city is also a slope. The use of stairs are required to get to most locations in the games. The city also appears to be quite rocky, with most of the vegetation appearing near the center. The city bears a strong resemblance (especially in the anime) to the Greek island of Santorini, with both having been built on sloping landscapes.
A long-sleeping Pokemon will descend upon this cavern in order to awaken its true powers.
Sootopolis is also home to the ancient Cave of Origin, although citizens are not permitted to enter. Cave of Origin is a key part of the games, and is where the player will eventually encounter either Kyogre or Groudon, depending on the game version. Rayquaza however, will not be found at this location. The player must use the HM Flash to properly navigate this location. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the location also exhibits strong natural energies, which will interfere with the players PokeNav. Aside from finding Kyogre and Groudon in the games, the cave is also home to the following Pokemon: Zubat, Golbat, Sableye, and Mawile. There are few items to be found, but HM Waterfall can be found in the cave in Ruby and Sapphire.
While the Cave of Origin and Sootopolis Gym are the main locations of interest in the games, there are still a few other things you can do while visiting the city. There is a Move Tutor located in Sootopolis city in Emerald, and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. In Emerald the Move Tutor is located inside of the Pokemon Center, and will teach a Pokemon Double-Edge on one occasion only. In Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, the Move Tutor an elderly man who is located in a house, which is located in the North-East section of the city. This Move Tutor will teach a Dragon type Pokemon Draco Meteor if your friendship level with the Pokemon is high enough.
The Competitive Brothers can also be found in Sootopolis City. They are two brothers located in a house which is North-East of the Pokemon Center. They can be found in the Games Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The principle behind the brothers is that they are arguing over two species of Pokemon. In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald the brothers are arguing over the size of their favorite Pokemon. If you show one of the brothers their favorite Pokemon, and it is the largest they have ever seen, then you will receive a prize. In Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, they are arguing over cuteness. You must show them their favorite Pokemon with an affection level of 4 or higher to receive a prize.
Lots of items can also be found in Sootopolis City. Some of these items require the item finder, while other requires using HM moves to reach. One of my favorite items that can be found in Sootopolis is a Wailmer Doll, which is given to the player by a Girl in a house that is East of the Pokemon Center. Each day, the player can also receive two berries from a girl named Kiri. Kiri can be reached by using the HM Surf to reach the South-West part of the city. Fishing is also something you can do in Sootopolis, but you are most likely to find Magikarp, and maybe a Tentacool or Gyarados if you are lucky. Aside from Kyogre and Groudon, Sootopolis is not one of the better cities for catching Pokemon.
